Chapter Ten

Betsy was smiling as she walked toward me.

“Hello, Isobel! How is everything?”

I forced a smile onto my face to cover the surprise.

“Hi Betsy! I’m good. Can I help you with anything today?”

I was worried the question sounded short, but I wasn’t sure what to say to her. While I wanted to ask about the note, I also wanted to ask about a million other things, like Celeste and my maybe-magical bond with Freya. But to bring that up felt too vulnerable.

“I just stopped by to see how you’re doing, dear,” she said. “It’s a slow day at the shop, so I was out for a walk and wanted to stop by.”

“Well I’m glad to see you,” I said, and I meant it, even though I felt more nervous around her than usual.

I had no idea if Coral had spoken to her about the note. If she had, I wanted to let Betsy bring it up first. If she hadn’t, I certainly didn’t want to spill the beans here. Instead, I decided to ask her about it indirectly.

“Betsy, is it possible I’ve been getting extra intuitive since I realized I was a witch? Lately I’ve been noticing strange vibes from people, even places. It’s almost like I can sense the energy from them. I’d been noticing it for a while, but after my last phone call with Freya, it seemed to get a lot stronger. Is it possible that my magic is linked to her somehow?”

Betsy listened but didn’t seem like she had any clue that what I was saying was possible.

“Honestly, Isobel, I have never heard of such a thing before. It could be that because you two found out you were witches together there is a connection there, but this is just a guess on my part. There are plenty of sibling witches, but I’ve never heard of one drawing strength from the other.”

“Thank you, Betsy. I do appreciate you listening,” I said.

It wasn’t the answer I wanted. In fact, it was the first time I could remember where Betsy hadn’t known what to tell me. I clicked into a new tab on my computer to start researching on my own when Betsy reached out to grab my arm, stopping me in my tracks.

“I may not be able to answer that particular question, but I can help you with what you’ve been feeling,” she explained. “It has to do with your magic type. Some witches’ powers are based on certain types of magic. You would be called a crystal witch, for example.”

I frowned, unsure what Betsy was referring to. “A crystal witch? Are you sure?”

She nodded. “Yes. Crystal witches can sense shifts in energies and see auras. They are very sensitive in this regard and are also connected to crystals, gems, rocks, and stones. Many crystal witches use these items when they practice magic. It can help to manifest and amplify their powers.”

The explanation Betsy had given me made sense. I had been feeling these strange, shifting energies lately coming from people and places.
